The Marshall Board of Education reviewed plans for a new auditorium on Monday, September 25. The auditorium is designed for theater, music, and dance performances, as well as lectures. There will be seats for 600 patrons on the main floor and 300 in the balcony. Monitors in the main lobby will be available to display activity in the main theater. Students assisted Superintendent Dr. Davis in starting the construction project that will remodel restrooms, replace playground equipment, replace fire alarm system, construct a dedicated bus drop-off loop, provide computer and technology upgrades, and construct new Pre-K classrooms.

See the Gordon project page for detailed information and architect renderings some of of the proposed improvements. Dr. Davis brought along a shovel used to start construction on the High School in 1970.

Among the three projects, there were 18 packages contractors could bid on. The District received:

  • 96 bids for work at Gordon
  • 71 bids for work at Hughes
  • 29 bids for work at the High School site and Elementary playgrounds

That’s an average of 10.8 bids per package! Because of a favorable bidding climate, some alternate bids were accepted to enhance the project over what was promised in the bond, and STILL remain under budget. Twenty-eight contracts were awarded:

  • 61% went to firms located 35 miles or less from the District
  • 83% of construction costs go to companies located 35 miles or less from the District
